Pikmin is a real time strategy/puzzle game series that debuted in 2001 for the Nintendo GameCube. It has six entries (not counting re-releases), with four mainline games released on several Nintendo platforms such as the GameCube and Wii U, a platformer spinoff on the 3DS, and a mobile game that encourages walking! The latest entry, Pikmin 4, officially released on July 21st, 2023 for the Nintendo Switch. It is the very first Nintendo IP that I was ever introduced to as a child. The first game in the series is the very first GameCube title I have ever played, so it has quite the sentimental value to me.
Pikmin themselves are silly little guys (quite literally, they're around the same size as a US dime!) who will follow their captain around and listen to their commands, whether it's defeating various enemies, breaking down gates, or collecting treasure. They're named after Pikpik Carrots, a food from Hocotate, Captain Olimar's home planet. Each different Pikmin type has its own unique characteristics and specialties, such as being immune to certain elements or being able to walk into water areas without drowning. Special shoutout to the Yellow Pikmin in specific. They're the very first thing I could somehow connect with and think "wow they're just like me for real" at age four.
I love all of the Pikmin, but my absolute favorite one has to be the White Pikmin! My certified slightly screwed-up baby! White Pikmin first appeared in Pikmin 2. They are able to dig things from the ground easily, are very fast, and are immune to poison. They can also spit poison, but this seems to be exclusive to the animated shorts for a comedic effect (we love this sassy baby in this house). They're also toxic via ingestion, but they're safe to hug. They're also such tiny little guys, being one of the tiniest Pikmin types. I care for them immensely and would genuinely have one as a pet if I could.
I have finally finished Pikmin 1 in July 2023 after owning the game for around 22 years, and am working my way through 2 and 3. With what I have played of Pikmin 4, it is easily my favorite game in the franchise as of now, and not just because the White Pikmin are back!! It feels the most beginner-friendly, so both Pikmin veterans and newcomers alike can jump in! Without spoiling, I can say that I can sense how much love put into the game (it is a ton and I am very pleased).
All four mainline games are available on the Nintendo Switch, making the mainline series easily accessible after all these years!
